The first Masonic Lodge in Weston-super-Mare was St Kew (1222), consecrated in 1868. This was followed 38 years later by King Alfred Lodge (3169). With the ending of the Great War of 1914, there was a decided increase in those who sought to enter Freemasonry and it soon became apparent that if all the acceptable candidates were to be admitted, a third Lodge would be necessary to meet the requirements of those anxious to enter the Order.

There was no lack of enthusiasm among those members of St Kew and King Alfred Lodge who were prepared to sponsor and become Founders of a new Lodge. The Petitioners, having received the sanction of Grand Lodge and Provincial Grand Lodge, were duly granted a Warrant by the M.W The Grand Master H.R.H The Duke of Connaught & Strathern K.G, under the title of “Wessex Lodge No. 4093”, dated the 17th February 1920. The Lodge was Consecrated on Tuesday the 1st June 1920 at 12:30 p.m.

The total number of Founders was 59, of these, 33 were members of St Kew Lodge and 19 of King Alfred Lodge. The first Worshipful Master of Wessex Lodge was Worshipful Brother R. J. Dart PPJGD.
