Tennyson Lodge has its origins in the mid 1920's, when prominent brethren in Clevedon decided that a second lodge should be founded in the town. It was felt that the practice of naming Lodges after poets should be continued (the mother Lodge being Coleridge Lodge 1750), and the founders petitioned for the name of Tennyson Lodge.

Tennyson Lodge prides itself on the form of the ritual which it works, in particular during the Installation. This is largely due to the work of W. Bro. R. S. Renton MD, PAGDC, second master of the Lodge. W. Bro. Renton was responsible for the alterations and additions to the Emulation ritual on which Tennyson ceremonies are based. Whilst none of the extended work is original to this Lodge and has been adapted from work performed elsewhere, the manner in which it has been brought together has produced a most distinctive and beautiful ceremony. In a world in which everything must be rushed, abbreviated and reduced, there is much to be said for taking a slightly slower look and having time to reflect further upon the morals and principals inculcated in Craft Masonry. We aim to give members and visitors the chance to do so.

Tennyson Lodge is indebted to Alfred Lord Tennyson's Descendents for permission to use their family crest as part of the Tennyson Lodge Banner. The motto is "Respiciens Prospiciens", meaning "Looking backwards, looking forwards". The lodge takes pride both in looking back at its traditions and history, and looking forwards towards whatever changes and developments Freemasonry in the province of Somerset will undergo in the years ahead.
