Certain junior members of the Eldon Lodge, No. 1755 meeting at Portishead, first
made the suggestion for a new lodge to the Worshipful Master, Worshipful Brother
W. Pugh Williams. The proposal was probably prompted by the fact that the
membership of Eldon Lodge had grown to nearly 170. This increasing numbers of
candidates coming forward, may well have caused frustration amongst the
membership due to the natural ambition of the younger members to progress.
Accordingly, on Wednesday 24th August 1921, at No. 10 Orchard Street. Bristol,
all those Brethren who had signified their wish to become Founder Members of the
new lodge were called together under the Chairmanship of Worshipful Brother W.
Pugh Williams.
The first business was to elect a Worshipful Master for the Proposed new Lodge
and Worshipful Brother W. Pugh Williams was unanimously elected He promptly
informed the Brethren that he felt that any Brother elected or appointed to
office in the new Lodge should relinquish any office he held in the Eldon Lodge
in order to give the younger Brethren there a better opportunity of advancement.
He then proposed and Bro. A.G. Farmer seconded, that Bro. T. Compton-West should
be the Senior Warden Designate and that Bro. James Tucker should be the Junior
Warden Designate. Other offices filled at that meeting were, Treasurer, W.Bro.
J. W. E Dickens, Secretary. Bro. George Tonkin, Director of Ceremonies. W. Bro.
P. Cox and Tyler, Bro. T. Berridge. This left a number of offices to be filled
and the Worshipful Master Designate proceeded to accomplish this during the
meetings which necessarily took place in order to complete the preparations for
the Consecration of the new Lodge.
When considering a name for the new Lodge; it was first suggested that it should
be called after the late W.Bro. William Rice, a Founder and Past Master of Eldon
Lodge. Other names suggested were "Albert', in memory of the late W Bro. A. R.
Knee. "Avonvale". And 'Wansdyke"; however, the Brethrens final choice was
"William Rice". When the petition for the formation of the Lodge was sent to
Grand Lodge this name was not approved. And on the suggestion of the R.W.
Provincial Grand Master, the name "Severn" was adopted.
When the matter of a Lodge Banner was discussed. it was felt that this should
bear the crest of the late W.Bro. William Rice, but if such a crest should be
non-existent, the permission of the Provincial Grand Master would be sought to
use his family crest. In the event this was the crest used and is of course,
that of the Longs of Rood Ashton, Wiltshire. The Latin motto at the top reads "Pieux
Quoique Preux" and may be translated as "Pious yet Courageous" A pious but
war-like character.
