As a consequence of the growth of freemasonry
in Yeovil, Brotherly Love No 329 decided to bring a new Lodge into existence.
The intention was to allow brethren the opportunity to progress as Lodge
Officers without the very lengthy delay that was being experienced. After
discussions it was agreed that the new Lodge would be named Progressive Science
The Warrant was issued on 1st February 1928 and the Lodge was
consecrated on 2nd October the same year by R WBro the Venerable Archdeacon
Farrer, Provincial Grand Master of Somerset.
The first Master was WBro B. B. Swaffield, P.P.G. org
(Dorset), P.P.S.G.W. (Dorset); the Senior Warden was WBro Sidney T Thring,
P.P.G.Supt Works and Junior Warden was WBro T P Hamlyn, P.P.G.Reg.
The Lodge badge was designed by Bro G. J. M. Mitchell, who
was appointed as the first Junior Deacon. It depicts Yeovil’s two main
industries of the time which are represented by a white glove and a pair of
wings. From the 14th century Yeovil had been the centre of the glove making
industry with an estimated three million pairs being produced in the 1830s,
(although this industry has since disappeared). The wings represent the
aeronautical and associated engineering companies which are now Yeovil’s main
industries. The motto of the Lodge is ‘Industria Manus’ and refers to the hand
work associated with both of these industries.
The Lodge membership has been consistent since its foundation
with 82 brethren at the time of the 25th anniversary in 1953; 82 at the 50th
anniversary in 1978; 74 at the 75th anniversary in 2003 and a current membership
of 70.
