A New Year's Greeting from the Provincial Grand Master

Dear Brethren,
Through the medium of the Internet and the good news that most of our Lodges are now using this IT facility for their communications, I was able to extend Seasonal Greetings to many of you in the weeks leading up to Christmas. For any who did not receive those greetings, (but to you all in any event) Poo joins me in sending our very best wishes in the hope that you and your families will enjoy a happy, healthy and fruitful New Year, and our thanks for the great kindness and generous hospitality we have enjoyed in travelling around the Province.

Without doubt we shall all be presented with new challenges and opportunities throughout the year where sound and solid Masonic principles will enable us to give a helping hand where and whenever it is needed. The new Provincial Summons format which was launched in 2008 has continued to receive approval and has been successful in addressing a number of important circulation issues including cost. Apart from the economies generated our many guests at Provincial Grand Lodge were able to take home their personal copy of Compass and thus read about the interesting activities within our Province.

A number of events have been planned within the Province during 2010 among which the Help for Heroes Service at Wells Cathedral on Saturday 27th February, and our own Provincial Church Service at the Cathedral on Sunday 6th June at 5.30 p.m. are significant. The Dean of Wells the Very Reverend John Clarke will preach at our Service and I shall be making a further presentation to him of the residual balance of donations so generously made by Lodges to celebrate 275 years of Masonry in Somerset in 2008. The Pilgrim’s Porch, now the main entrance to the Cathedral has two Porch Stones created by Alwyn Leek, complete with the Provincial Banner motifs, as a focal point.

Other events will be widely publicised through the Provincial Information Officer during the course of the year. The publication of the new Provincial History has been delayed for various technical reasons but with a fair wind should be available for distribution in June. It promises to be a superb and comprehensive record of Masonry in Somerset over the past 275 years, and will be extensively illustrated thus bringing to light many of the marvellous documents and jewels within our Lodges.

I look forward to meeting many of you and your families during the course of the year and as always extend a warm welcome to many new Brethren who have become or will soon become members of Somerset Lodges. We continue to be very fortunate in attracting men of good character to whom the fine principles and high standards of Masonry have appealed. May the Grand Design of being happy and communicating happiness guide and serve us well throughout this year and into the future.

With all good wishes, David Lloyd Jenkins
