The lodge was formed in 1810 in the village of Martock, and moved into Yeovil
itself in 1820. Brotherly Love has sponsored three daughter lodges in the
Province - Parrett & Axe Lodge 814 (Crewkerne) in 1860, and in Yeovil -
Progressive Science Lodge No 5007 in 1928, and Corinthian Pillar Lodge No 7552
in 1957. It was also one of the lodges responsible for sponsoring the move of
Royal Naval Lodge 2761 from Malta to Yeovil in 1985, and which subsequently
joined the Province of Somerset in 1987.
The Lodge held it's Centenary in 1910, which was marked by a public procession
in Masonic regalia through the town, and by special meetings of the lodge and of
the Provincial Grand Lodge of Somerset in the Yeovil Town Hall. The Lodge
celebrates its Bi-Centenary in 2010. Brotherly Love constructed the purpose
built Yeovil Masonic Hall in 1894, which was significantly extended by Yeovil
lodges in 1996 providing excellent facilities for all who use the building. It
is a peculiar tradition of the lodge that since it's inception, it has held its
meetings on the Wednesday on or immediately preceding the full moon. This custom
was originally established to enable members travelling to Martock by horse and
carriage to see their way home by moonlight.
The lodge currently comprises ninety members, and has maintained a membership of
between 90 and 100 for many years. Brotherly Love has an established and proud
tradition of supporting local causes in addition to it's Masonic commitments,
including Yeovil District Hospital, equipment for Health Centres, Blood
Transfusion courier services, Local Church appeals, Somerset & Dorset Air
Ambulance, St Margaret's Hospice Yeovil Appeal.
